Background of the Study
Cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, posing significant risks to the integrity of network systems and data. Institutions like Federal University, Gashua, are not immune to these risks, as they handle sensitive data and rely heavily on online platforms for academic, administrative, and research activities. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial to have an effective incident response plan (IRP) in place. A cybersecurity incident response plan helps institutions react quickly and effectively when a security breach occurs, minimizing the impact of the breach and protecting critical assets. By developing a comprehensive IRP, the university can ensure that all stakeholders are prepared to respond appropriately in the event of an attack, thereby enhancing the institution's overall cybersecurity posture. This study focuses on developing a cybersecurity incident response plan specifically tailored to the needs of Federal University, Gashua.

Statement of the Problem
Federal University, Gashua currently lacks a formal cybersecurity incident response plan. Without a clearly defined set of protocols and procedures, the university is vulnerable to delays in response times during security incidents, which can result in data loss, system downtime, and reputational damage. Given the increasing sophistication of cyber threats, the university’s lack of an incident response strategy could have severe consequences on both the academic and operational functions of the institution. This study aims to develop a comprehensive cybersecurity incident response plan for Federal University, Gashua, to ensure a structured, efficient, and coordinated response to potential cybersecurity incidents.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the current cybersecurity challenges faced by Federal University, Gashua.

  2. To develop a cybersecurity incident response plan tailored to the specific needs of Federal University, Gashua.

  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of the incident response plan in improving the university’s ability to handle cybersecurity threats.

Research Questions

  1. What are the primary cybersecurity challenges faced by Federal University, Gashua, that could lead to security incidents?

  2. How can a tailored incident response plan improve the university’s response to cybersecurity threats?

  3. What are the key components of an effective cybersecurity incident response plan for Federal University, Gashua?

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the development of a cybersecurity incident response plan specific to the needs and challenges of Federal University, Gashua. It will not cover cybersecurity plans for external organizations or other educational institutions. Limitations include potential challenges in gathering sufficient data on past incidents and the implementation of the response plan due to resource constraints.

Definitions of Terms

  • Incident Response Plan (IRP): A set of predefined procedures that guide an organization’s response to a cybersecurity incident.

  • Cybersecurity Threat: A potential malicious attack that aims to breach a system’s security, steal sensitive data, or disrupt operations.

  • Data Breach: An unauthorized access or exposure of sensitive data.
